What Is Surgical Hair Restoration?

Surgical hair restoration permanently relocates a patient’s own healthy hair follicles from a donor area, such as the back or sides of the scalp, into areas affected by thinning or hair loss. Unlike nonsurgical treatments, which can slow hair loss or improve density temporarily, surgical restoration provides a long-lasting solution using hair that continues to grow naturally in its new location.

What sets Dr. Epstein’s practice apart is his ability to offer patients the most advanced surgical techniques performed by a facial plastic surgeon with a trained, aesthetic eye for natural results—a meaningful contrast to the turnkey approach practiced by less experienced providers and hair clinics.

How Does Hair Loss Affect Men and Women?

Hair loss can take a physical and emotional toll on men and women alike. Studies consistently show that people experiencing hair loss are more likely to face low self-esteem and reduced confidence in professional and social settings, sometimes even causing emotional distress. Yet, it’s more common than many realize:

  • By age 35, approximately 40% of men experience visible hair loss
  • By age 50, around 50% of women have noticeable hair loss.

While hair loss may be relatable, it’s not something people have to accept. Advances in hair transplants for men and hair transplants for women have made permanent, natural-looking results more accessible and refined than ever, especially in Dr. Epstein’s highly experienced and capable hands.

What Types of Hair Transplant Surgery Does Dr. Epstein Perform?

Dr. Epstein offers a full range of surgical hair transplant procedures at his Miami practice. Each procedure is tailored to the patient’s specific pattern of hair loss, donor supply, and aesthetic goals, from restoring scalp density to redefining the hairline, eyebrows, and beard.

FUE Hair Transplant

FUE (follicular unit extraction) is the gold standard in modern hair transplant surgery, and Dr. Epstein is among the most experienced FUE surgeons in the United States. During an FUE hair transplant, individual hair follicles are extracted one at a time using tiny punches measuring less than 1 mm in diameter. The grafts are then placed into recipient sites, each one meticulously made by Dr. Epstein to achieve a fully natural growth pattern.

Unlike FUT (follicular unit transplantation), which removes a linear strip of the scalp and leaves a linear scar, FUE allows for a faster and easier recovery. It allows the patient to be able to fully shave his head, if desired, provides the flexibility to harvest donor hair from virtually any area of the scalp, as well as the beard, to allow for the most natural-looking, impressive results.

Dr. Epstein specializes in state-of-the-art FUE techniques such as:

  • No-shave FUE for patients who want to avoid visible signs of surgery and preserve their existing hairstyle. Dr. Epstein is a pioneer of this technique, which enables most patients to confidently return to their normal activities in 24 hours, without a hat or other concealment.
  • Body hair transplant (BHT) for patients with limited scalp donor hair who have exhausted other options. Dr. Epstein is one of a small number of surgeons worldwide who routinely use FUE to perform BHT in both directions—body to scalp and scalp to body.

Hair Transplant Repair

Repair and revision cases represent a significant share of Dr. Epstein’s practice. Whether correcting an unnatural hairline, poor density, visible scarring, or improperly palced grafts, hair transplant repair requires a level of expertise most providers and hair clinics simply don’t have. Patients travel from across the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, specifically for Dr. Epstein’s proven repair expertise.

Hairline Lowering/Forehead Reduction Surgery

For patients with a genetically high or disproportionate forehead, hairline lowering/forehead reduction surgery delivers immediate, permanent results in a single 2-hour procedure. Dr. Epstein is among a small number of plastic surgeons worldwide who specialize in this advanced surgical technique—and one of the few who performs FUE hair grafting as a complementary or alternative approach, ensuring every patient receives the most appropriate solution for their anatomy and goals.

Eyebrow Transplant & Eyebrow Restoration

Having performed more than 2,000 eyebrow restoration procedures, Dr. Epstein is one, if not the most, experienced eyebrow transplant surgeons in the world. Using custom-cut 0.5 mm blades—among the smallest used by any surgeon—he meticulously creates recipient sites precisely angled to replicate natural eyebrow growth, delivering fuller, permanent results.

Beard Transplant

With more than 900 beard transplants performed, Dr. Epstein creates natural-looking facial hair that can be shaved, trimmed, and styled like native beard hair. His advanced FUE technique is equally effective for filling in patchy growth, concealing scars, or repairing prior unsatisfactory beard procedures.

Surgical Hair Restoration FAQs

What is the difference between FUE and FUT hair transplant surgery?

FUE removes individual hair follicles one at a time, leaving no linear scarring and a faster recovery. FUT, or the “strip” method, removes a thin strip of scalp to harvest a larger number of grafts at once, but leaves a linear scar. Dr. Epstein specializes in FUE, including no-shave techniques, for virtually undetectable results.

How many grafts will I need for a hair transplant?

The number of grafts depends on the extent of hair loss, the area being treated, and your aesthetic goals. With an FUE hair transplant, Dr. Epstein can often transplant 1,800 to 2,400 grafts, but can often transplant as many as 3,000 or more grafts during a single session. He provides a personalized graft estimate during the consultation, tailored to each patient’s donor supply and desired density.

Are hair transplants painful?

No. Dr. Epstein performs most hair transplants using local anesthesia and oral sedation, so patients typically remain comfortable during the procedure. Twilight sedation administered by the practice’s anesthetist is also offered. It’s uncommon to experience anything more than minimal soreness or swelling afterward, with most patients surprised by how easy and painless the recovery process is.

Are hair transplant results permanent?

Yes. Transplanted hair follicles are typically taken from areas genetically resistant to the hormone responsible for pattern hair loss, which is why hair transplant results are generally considered permanent.

Is it safe to get a hair transplant abroad?

Many patients are drawn to lower-cost hair transplants performed outside the U.S., but outcomes can vary significantly depending on the surgeon’s training, technique, and oversight. In fact, in many cases, these clinics utilized hair technicians to perform most if not the entire procedure. Complications such as poor graft placement, unnatural density, and visible scarring are among the most common reasons patients seek out Dr. Epstein to correct unsatisfactory results from hair transplant procedures performed abroad. Note, too, that this clinic-model of technician-performed procedures is not uncommon in the United States, with similar cosmetic issues.
