Ingrown hairs may occur within the first months following a hair transplant and they look like skin pimples or lesions. A patient may develop this as the new hair is beginning to grow.
This type of lesion is also called folliculitis and it may look like acne, often starting out as small red bumps forming around each hair, occasionally with a yellow or white head. It can feel hot, itchy, and painful. It is considered a fairly common condition after a hair transplant.

Unfortunately, having ingrown hairs a few years after, probably have more to do with a poor technique in the hair transplant. If the hairs themselves were not completely buried, you should not be having problems with ingrown hairs.
Why do ingrown hairs occur after a hair transplant?
Because the hair follicles were completely buried underneath the skin, the epithelium or skin covering will grow over and sometimes create ingrown hair.
Can ingrown hairs be fixed?
They usually have to be opened up and removed so that the follicles can then extrude the hair naturally.
